I have a new 80 GB hard drive in my player. (Single disk) It has had a total of nine synchs applied to it. It has Hijack installed, and the "Filesystem Check on Sync" set to disabled.

So why did I have to wait for the better part of an hour while it checked media during my last synch?

Because you've been very, very naughty. The empeg knows these things...

Greetings!

I think that (but I am not certain if) the disable filesystem check flag through hijack only applies when the filesystem mount counter exceeds the threshold (30?). Now, if there was any damage or other error on the filesystem (from leaving the drive mounted read/write and restarting the player, for example), I believe that emplode will still perform that check in that case.

Note: on an 80GB drive with older players or players with applications running in the background (less RAM), there is a chance that this fsck that emplode kicks off will fail silently. (Usually, the error you will not see is that fsck cannot allocate enough memory for the table space for Pass 5 of the fsck...) You will be able to do your sync, everything will look normal, but the next time you sync you will again have a full filesystem check because the "dirty" flag was not cleared. This situation can only be cleared by fsck-ing the drives manually.

Perhaps it had been six months since the last media check?

Please note that there is an option in Hijack to disable the periodic media checks.

Tony, you may have missed this in his post: "It has Hijack installed, and the "Filesystem Check on Sync" set to disabled."

Ah, I did miss that in his post.

Okay, then, the entry I linked above contains the following text:

If you get a long "Checking Disk Integrity" twice in a row when synchronizing, or it happens even after disabling the periodic checking in Hijack, then you might have a problem with the disks or the filesystem. First rule out disk hardware trouble as a possible culprit, then check the disks by hand.

No, brand new 80 GB hard drive, ran drive builder on it about two weeks ago, and only 9 synchs on it when it did the media check.

No hint of hardware trouble in the player or the hard drive -- it has functioned as reliably and trouble-free as your typical anvil.

Paul's answer contains the only possible explanations.
